Belle Ware glass was made in 1903 by Carl V. Helmschmied. In 1904 he started a corporation
known as the Helmschmied Manufacturing Company. His factory closed in 1908 and he worked on
his own until his death in 1934. Information courtesy of Kovel's Price Guide.
My client has a
clipping from the March 1977 Hobbies - The Magazine For Collectors. It is an advertisement
for an antique shop that specialized in American decorated glass and lamps. Included is a
photo of a Belle Ware Humidor, pink roses on yellow to brown background. Elaborate Art
Nouveau metal top 6" high.
This humidor is
6 1/4" high to the top of the lid and almost identical to the one in the photo.
The background is yellow shading to brown with an open pink and white roses on the front.
It also has two beautiful buds.
The lid is classic
Art Nouveau with flowers and swirls, all done in relief work. Absolutely gorgeous!
The glass is
referred to as Opal Ware. It does have some minor roughness around the opening which is not
surprising since the lid fits quite snuggly and must be fairly air tight because the inside
of the lid is bright and shiny, like new!
Belle Ware seems to be
rather rare as I couldn't find but a very few pieces and little information using a Google
search.
Don't let this opportunity
pass you by, you may not be able to find another one for years!
