Item Description: This Victorian Child's Breakfast Porridge Set has an Interesting Provenance. Victorian child's breakfast set or porridge set: 3 matching pieces of Victorian hand painted china. Clay base is heavy, probably stoneware. Stoneware or utility ware is a more durable choice for making a child's breakfast service set, than thin porcelain. Handpainted, probably done during the China Painting Fad of the Victorian years. China painting was an artistic endeavour in which women predominated, and was considered an appropriate activity for middle-class women in late-Victorian society. Factory-made china blanks were purchased and then decorated by women as a diversion or as a means of earning a living. This set of porridge bowl, underplate, and cream/milk pitcher was painted by a talented artist, as shown by the sureness of the brush strokes, see close up photos. There are a couple of small brown dots that you can see in the photos, from the hand painting; one is near the rim of the bowl. These pieces are decorated with Beautiful swashes of lavender and pale brown leaves and flowers, accented with gold trim swirls in background. Rims also were gilded, though now somewhat worn, consistent with age of over 100 years. China condition, is excellent, no cracks, crazing or chips. Hand written note details the 1890 gifting of this set to a young girl about 2 years old. She was the niece of Charles Perdew, famed folk artist bird decoy carver of the Illinois River Valley area. This set comes to us from the estate of a woman who grew up with the granddaughter of the original owner in the Central Illinois area. Bowl Measures 4" dia. x 2-1/2" high. Saucer plate us 6" dia. x 3/4" high and underside marked 6400. Pitcher is 4" wide, spout to handle, and 3/12" high, marked underneath, 6900.
