With its powerful, unapologetic prose, Douglass' account of his early years gave white Americans the victim's view of the institution of slavery--showing its daily humiliations, hypocrisies, and matter-of-fact brutality.<P>When it was originally published in 1845, Douglass' narrative caused a stir, and propelled Douglass to the forefront of the abolitionist movement, where he became its leading black spokesman. Known for his acute intelligence and commanding eloquence, Douglass was soon at the center of American intellectual life in the nineteenth century--as an activist, editor, orator, politician, diplomat, polemicist, and memoirist.<P>Arguably, no public figure in the history of America has had a more varied and interesting caree, nor traveled a greater distance in rank from the beginning of his life to the end than Frederick Douglass. Born in bondage, escaping from slavery, living as a fugitive from "justice" with a price on his head, and painstakingly educating himself, Frederick Douglass became one of the most celebrated and accomplished men of the nineteenth century.<P>Good condition with minimal wear to the cover.
