We believe it to be painted on vellum. Vellum was an early choice before canvas became popular after 1500. Note the fur or ermine collar and jewelery above forehead. Both are signs of royalty. We were not able to identify but did find a strong resemblance to Katherine Parr. She was Henry VIIIs 6th and final wife. We looked at 100s of pictures but we cannot definitely identify. Image is a 3 1/2' by 2 1/2" oval. It is in a 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" ebonized frame with an acorn brass or bronze hanger on top. A small piece of backing was removed before we acquired to view back of portrait. It is in good condition for it's age. A very intriguing addition to any collection. It came out of a New York City estate. Shipping is No Charge anywhere in the US.
