1964 Vintage Syrian
Inlaid Mosaic
Wood & Ivory
Jewelry or table box
Fine Condition
Description:
· This is a gorgeous example of traditional Syrian inlay work from 45 years ago. Many woods are used. The inlay is made by gluing together long strips of wood, so that their cross-section forms a pattern when sliced,
· I received this magnificent inlaid wood and ivory box in 1964 as a gift from a friend who had purchased it on a trip to the Middle East that same year.
· This spectacular box is all handmade of solid wood with many varieties of wood used in the intricate inlaid design.
· Unlike most of the Syrian boxes made today, all the light areas of the box are made of IVORY with the only exception being the four small diamond shaped pieces in the four corners of the top which are made of mother-of-pearl.
· The top and all four sides of this box are totally covered in beautiful inlaid hand work.
· There is also an inlaid section on the inside of the box. (See photo of inside)
· It has two brass hinges on the back side.
· It measures approximately 6” long by 4 ½” wide by 2” tall
Condition:

· There are some tiny inlaid pieces missing from the top of the box but none missing on any of the sides.
