Item Description: I am selling the book THE PRICE OF HONOR -- THE WORLD WAR ONE LETTERS OF NAVAL AVIATOR KENNETH MACLEISH, edited by Geoffrey L. Rossano, copyright 1991. The book measures approximately 6" x 9-1/2" and is 242 pages long. Both the hardbound book and the dust jacket are in good condition. There is light soiling on the foredges. This volume was published the Naval Institute Press. A glossy black-and-white photo section illustrates the text. <P>Kenneth MacLeish, the younger brother of poet Archibald MacLeish, was a member of the First Yale Unit, a popular group of young naval pilots from Yale University who formed the nucleus of the fledgling American aviation forces in Europe during World War One. This collection of over 200 never-before-published letters to his fiancee, Priscilla Murdock, cover MacLeish's entire flying career, from his early training as a student volunteer in March 1917 until his death in combat just three weeks before the war's end. <P>Fully annotated and supplemented with occasional correspondence to his family in Chicago, these letters are unique in scope and detail, frankly describing a combat pilot's experiences both on the ground and in the air over the front lines of France and Belgium. Because MacLeish's own development as an aviator so closely paralleled the early development of naval aviation, the letters are valuable historical documents as well as personal family traasures. <P>MacLeish offers a rare chronicle of the U.S. Navy's first air war. He provides a fascinating commentary on his flight training and the aircraft he flew, including the Curtiss F-Boat and N-9, the Hanriot-Dupont H.D.2, the D.H.9 day bomber, and the Sopwith Camel, which he flew on his last mission.
