I do not know how to describe this vintage signed Italian art pottery elephant. To me it looks like an Eames era modernist, Cave Art, Neolithic, primitive piece. When I first saw it before looking at the artist's signature I thought it was a Fantoni or Raymor Bitossi piece. It appears to be made out of heavy clay, ceramic or terracotta.
It is marked with a signature, numbered 5046 and Italy.
Since I had trouble figuring out the artist's signature I contacted the author of Italian Pottery Marks From Cantagalli To Fornasetti, Walter Del Pellegrino.
He could not decipher the writing either and here is what he told me:
"It is, in part, in the style of Gambone or more specifically, Bruno Gambone, the son of Guido Gambone. The form of this piece is inspired by the Neolithic (stone age) art found on cave walls and the small ivory and bone carved figurines. Over the last decade or so there seems to have been an art movement, as yet unnamed by art critics, centering on this primitive art form. The patina, drilled holes and scratch marks on this elephant are very evocative of Neolithic figurines. It is beautifully done. I think that this is a newer piece rather than 50's or 60's.
I do not know how old this piece is but, do think it is several decades old. When I acquired it the piece had a broken left ear. I re-glued it back on. It is quite heavy and is a nice sized figural sculpture. It measures approximately It is 8" high, 11" long, and 3" across.
Since the ear was re-glued back on and was damaged this piece will be sold "as is" with no returns. If anyone knows who the artist is, please email me. I would love to know. Thanks : )

The identification and dating of Antiques and Decorative Arts is at times a more or less subjective endeavor. For a variety of reasons, one ‘expert’s’ results can differ from another’s. My descriptions are based on my researches and experience. The time to question these, is before bidding, not after. I go to great lengths to be as accurate as possible and to provide enough photographs to allow the buyer to exercise their own judgment. However, I cannot be responsible for differing opinions, when brought into play after the close of an auction. If you remain uneasy about an item I am listing, even after contacting me, the decision to bid will be your responsibility.
I do not smoke, but do not know how many smoking homes these antique / vintage items have been in for all these years. I do have 2 dogs, but all my items for sale are kept behind glass or away from my pets.
If you have any questions please email me. I would be glad to answer your questions quickly. All sales are final as these items are vintage, antique or very old. Antique or vintage items are used and I never describe them as mint.
Any flaws I see will be noted in auction description. However, antique and vintage items are not perfect and may have imperfections from age that I may have missed by accident. I provide lots of photos at many different angles for you to see the condition very well. Therefore no partial refunds will be allowed. If anything needs to be returned you will pay return shipping. Refund will not include original shipping costs and item must be returned in the same condition as sent. More pictures will be furnished glady upon request. By bidding you agree to these terms. Thanks.
I pack antiques, porcelain, delicates, and collectibles with plenty of care. No need to worry. I usually have very fragile items professionally packed by the UPS Store and pay for that service out of my own pocket. I think my customers are worth the extra effort. Fragile items will be packed in layers of bubblewrap, and the box will be padded with plenty of cushioning.
